The Pin Drop @ Southbank Centre, London, UK
The Customer – Southbank Centre
Glow Inflatables Ltd was commissioned to deliver a landmark installation celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Southbank Centre in London. The project formed part of a wider cultural programme reflecting on the legacy of the 1951 Festival of Britain, a post-war regeneration in the heart of the capital. Described as a ‘tonic for the nation’, the festival showcased the best in science, technology, art and design. The Southbank is now Europe’s largest arts centre and a world-famous cultural hub, blending national heritage with contemporary creative expression.
‘You Are Here’ brings the anniversary celebrations through the subsequent decades in an exhilarating cultural journey. Event co-creator and legendary director Danny Boyle described the Southbank Centre as a ‘gargantuan labyrinth of opportunity’. The unique cultural site needed to be reimagined on a colossal scale; that’s where Glow Inflatables Ltd were the perfect choice.

The Challenge – To create a bold, large-scale installation to mark 75 years of The Southbank Centre in London
To draw attention to the ‘You Are Here’ event, designers Gareth Pugh and Carson McColl commissioned ‘The Pin Drop’ – a twenty-metre-tall inflatable installation to be suspended 28 metres from the ground. The structure draws inspiration from post-war vertical landmark ‘Skylon’, a symbol of national renewal after World War Two. However, the location pin is a feature of the contemporary age and here it is reimagined as a larger-than-life statement of fact. The Pin Drop was designed to act as both a visual beacon and a symbolic statement of place, marking the enduring national significance of the Southbank Centre and the Royal Festival Hall.
Pugh said that they aimed to create something ‘current, modern and visually arresting’ and a ‘visual punch in the face’. Indeed, The Pin Drop is to date one of the largest inflatable installations ever produced by the team at Glow Inflatables, creating a towering visually engaging landmark visible across the London skyline.
Delivering a structure of this scale in a high-profile urban environment requires precise engineering and stability planning, and coordination between multiple technical area’s. Glow Inflatables thrive on pushing the boundaries of possibility and welcomed the challenge of meeting this ambitious brief.

The Solution – A bespoke 20-metre inflatable pin, engineered for both structural integrity and visual impact.
The Pin Drop installation was developed in close collaboration with the designers to ensure their vision of ‘energy and promise’ was realised. Glow Inflatables ensured that there was a seamless integration of structure, rigging and advanced lighting technology.
The sculptural punctuation mark was made with 600 square metres of durable nylon weighing in at 360kg. It was carefully suspended from a 150-tonne crane to a height of 50 metres. The lighting incorporated nearly 20,000 individual LED lights with bespoke programming, enabling dynamic changes in tone and intensity throughout the event.
By day, The Pin Drop provided a bold sculptural landmark towering above the Southbank skyline, and by night the enormous inflatable installation created a luminous focal point, casting dynamic light across the River Thames.

The Outcome – A highly visible and memorable landmark for the anniversary celebrations
Through detailed planning and collaboration, the team at Glow Inflatables Ltd successfully executed a safe, durable and visually impactful installation drawing on all our experience and expertise.
By using an oversized location pin to state ‘You Are Here’, it highlighted the contrast between screen-based experiences and real-life cultural events. It also demonstrated the potential of inflatable structures in large-scale public art and storytelling.
The installation effectively reconnected audiences with the optimistic spirit of the Festival of Britain while presenting it through a modern, innovative lens. Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said that The Pin Drop was ‘a fitting way to mark this historic moment’.
