At Glow Inflatables Ltd, we’re always inspired by the ways immersive installations can reshape how people experience space and few current exhibitions do this as powerfully as The Descent. This installation by artist Lulu MacDonald is now live at St. Catherine’s Church in Hamburg, Germany until 30th April.

Set within the historic walls of one of Hamburg’s most iconic churches, The Descent is a striking fusion of contemporary inflatable design and centuries-old architecture. For Lulu’s installation, Glow created hundreds of fish-shaped foil balloons which were arranged dramatically in different areas of the church.

The contrast between the permanence of stone and the softness of Glow’s myriads of shimmering inflatable fish creates a dialogue between tradition and innovation. The effect is almost otherworldly: a descent not just through the installation, but into a quieter, more introspective state of mind. Visitors are encouraged to slow down, to look up and to reconsider their relationship with the space around them in an environment that already carries deep cultural and emotional significance.

The Descent highlights the unique strengths of inflatable structures. Lightweight yet monumental, they allow artists and designers to install large-scale artworks without permanent impact on historic sites, creating new possibilities for temporary exhibitions in sensitive or protected environments.

The team at Glow Inflatables recognises how spaces can be transformed in ways that are both visually stunning and logistically efficient. As we continue to explore new ways to bring immersive concepts to life, exhibitions like this reinforce our belief in the versatility and impact of inflatable design.
